What if Miss Havisham Had a Blog?

Yes. That's right. This is what came to my mind at exactly 6:07 a.m. this morning as I was curling my hair (beauty doesn't just happen people!) and my thoughts were my own...all of a sudden my mind said to me, "Hmmm, what if Miss Havisham had a blog, that would be awesome, I wonder what she would post about? Maybe it would help her connect with other jilted lovers who never see the sun, hate men, and sit around in their yellowed wedding dresses? Then she wouldn't have had to be so lonely, and maybe she wouldn't have caused Estella so much grief."

(Have I ever mentioned that sometimes a character is so real to me I actually believe they ARE real? Miss Havisham is probably one of my favorite characters of all time....my biggest fear was to grow up and be like her......please, no comments on our similarities...)

Simply put, blogs have opened worlds for people....myself included. What was life like before I blogged? It's hard to imagine it.

Then as I was putting on my make-up (yep, third morning in a row...it will only last until October, then I turn back into a pumpkin at work).. I was thinking of all the things Miss Havisham could say...imagine her movie reviews on Corpse Bride, Psycho, Misery, or Becoming Jane?

Imagine her getting tv and watching Martha Stewart so she finally knows what to do with that old, dusty tablecloth.

Imagine her watching Dr. Phil and  seeing other jilted women echoing her own sentiments-- "Nothing is more painful than realizing that he meant everything to you and yet you meant nothing to him." or "The easy part is hating you, the hard part is admitting I will never stop loving you."

Would she write about the futility of having expectations at all, let alone great ones?

What else do you see Miss Havisham blogging about?

If you could choose a fictional character to have a blog, who would it be? What do you think they would blog about?

Hamlet. I chose Hamlet. Imagine the drama. Imagine the twisted logic.

Maybe if he got the right comments, he would listen to some sort of reason, let Ophelia in on the game, be counseled to just kill the bastard already, and win the day.

You know how most people fall in love with actors? Not me. I fall in love with characters.

You know, not Johnny Depp, but his character in Chocolat. Not Colin Firth, but Darcy... Hey! That's you.

oooh, d'arcy. this is such a good idea. i'm one of those people as well, for whom fictional characters become like real people. i fall in love with fictional guys, i get mad at fictional jerks and really pout about what they did, all that fun stuff. people (real people) have to remind me that "it's just a movie!" or "it's just a story!"
oh, i just read rowena's comment. that's me too.
the first guy i ever fell in love with was chris from northern exposure.
anyway, blog: alice in wonderland's would be kind of far out, wouldn't it?

Great post, D'Arce!
Yes, this is the curse (or blessing, depending on how your look at it) for those of us who love to read and have uber-active imaginations. Our beloved characters become oh-so-real, don't they?

This is a juicy question and one I will mull over in my mind whilst I sleep (or perhaps, toss and turn...)

I'm thinking my answer will probably be the noble, yet multi-faceted and complex George Bailey. He has always been one of my heroes and one of my very favorite characters. And yes, like Rowena and Jomama, I did fall in love with him (shhhh... don't tell Hubster.... ).

:-)

Oh, I LOVE Miss Havisham. Wow. What a great idea. Let's see. The Wicked Witch of the West? Dorothy? (I'm not reading other people's comments yet so I can answer this on my own) Okay, not fictional, but Sylvia Plath.

Pick a princess-Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty? I'd want to hear if it was really happily ever after.

The Cheshire Cat! Samwise Gamgee. Lucy Pevensie. Susan too.

Oh, I could go on. I'll stop now. But this will stay with me.

I know, I know...Horton. Ya know, from Horton Hatches an Egg, or Horton Hears a Who? That guy has really been places. He'd have..perspective. Yeah, I'd pick him.

(Should I admit that I had to google "Miss Haversham" before I felt confident enough to comment on this particular post? Don't think too little of me, D'Arcy. I've almost been out of school as long as I was actually in it.)

Jenn, you spelled her name wrong. Just thought I'd point that out to squash all confidence you were feeling....

I swear I'm not like this in the classroom folks!

Rowena

yeah, that whole gang, Hamlet---no more talking to skulls, he'd have other wronged Princes to mull things over with...

Maybe if Ophelia had found a supportive group of strong women thinkers her fate could have been something else....

yes, characters, so in love...although, Johnny Depp....hmmmmmm

Jo--Alice---I bet Pink Floyd would start playing when you clicked on it.

George! It would be all about the ups and downs of his wonderful life! I bet it would be a feel good blog....one that we would donate money to if anything ever happened to him.

mapelba--wow, TONS of good ones there. I would have been an avid reader of all, but probably most Sylvia Plath, the idea of exchanging thoughts and comments with her in real life is a thrilling, filling thought.

Jenn--Horton! What a great one, he'd be full of perspective, perseverance and I bet he would make it to the top of Machu Picchu ( because you know, he doesn't give up...)

BYW...I just want to say I actually read Good Expectations once upon a time. See how far I've fallen from grace?

Oh my gosh! I meant GREAT Expectations! GREAT!!!!

(oooh, I am so embarassed)

Miss Havisham totally needed a blog. Or TV. Oprah. Some Oprah would have been good for her.

I would like to see Caroline Bingley with a blog--so snotty it would make me laugh. Or, while I'm on P&P characters, Lady Catherine. I mean, she takes herself soooo seriously. It would be awesome.

I would totally read a blog by Chihiro from Sprited Away. Such an amazing story would make a fun blog!

This is a fabulous idea - I'm thinking Pepe le Peu (for romance), or Madame Bovary for the intrigue and haberdashery.

HWHL said...

Kate, I LOVE the Pepe le Peu idea! I'm laughing out loud! He was my VERY favorite cartoon character as a child!

D'Arce, can we set up a little "sister blog" to yours where we can post as our characters? Wouldn't that be FUN? (Or am I just being a total dork now, and taking this WAY too far???)

Princess Buttercup. I'm serious. I wonder what she was thinking the whole time... waiting for Wesley... and then what would she have twittered when she was being lead through the Fireswamp. I would love to hear her tell how scary the ROUSes really were. Then, I'd love to read all about the great adventures she and Wesley have after they ride off in to the sunset after the kiss that was rated "the most pure" of all time. aaaahhhh....

Or maybe I'd like to read a blog by the Little Mermaid... hmmm...

Claire from Diane Gabaldon's Outlander series. I never wanted the series to end because I loved her character so much. She was very interesting.

I'm loving reading all these comments... :-)

I wish my dogs could blog.
Granted it would be boring...
"When do I eat?"
"Look - a chew toy!"
"Time for a nap!"
That would be the extent of it.

Jenn...really GOOD Expectations? You just make it too easy for me my friend!

Happy Anniversary! I'd like to borrow that wedding bouquet of yours and pose for fake wedding pictures again. Remember when Stacey and Merle did fake engagements to fool their parents for something? Or they were planning on it ....or something.

It's all hazy now.

But your wedding was cool.

Unknown said...

Alisa,

Caroline would be just the type of girl that you would secretly read because she would know all the latest fashions and have all the dirty gossip on people, but in public you would pretend to treat her blog with serious disdain.

Unknown said...

Dottie---is it weird that I KNEW that was exactly who you would choose? You could do the art work for it!

Unknown said...

Kate! Both amazing choices, Pepe's would be in French right? I've only ever heard him speak French, because that is how my high school teacher taught us all French...I've never seen him in English.

And Bovary...yes, she needed a blog, but she'd have to use a nom de plum, too many men could read it and get upset, and we know what would happen then.

Unknown said...

Sugar, I bet Westly got on her nerves...and he STOPPED saying "As you wish."

Just a guess.

D'Arcy

Your blog visitor comments are becoming as interesting as your posts.

I wonder if one day you will become the Oprah of blogging?

Will you still remember us, your early supporters?

Characters I would love to be, I only have three -

1. Atticus Finch played by Gregory Peck in "To Kill a Mockingbird". His courage, beliefs rock.

2. Sundance Kid in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"- He is a rebel, a lover of the West, a dangerous gun toting outlaw who never killed anyone ( at least thats what he told Butch half way through the movie)and he loved beauty in all its forms.

3. Paul (played by Brad Pitt) in "A River Runs Through It" for his sheer love of fly fishing.

Gus,

If only blogging paid money, I could make a rich living. And yes, my early supporters will never be forgotten.

I can see you in each of these roles, though, you in a cowboy hat, riding over the wild plains of Utah could be a pretty good Butch reenactment. My uncle has the best horses ever...come visit and I will hook you up. In the winter he even brings out the old fashion sleigh and hooks his horses up to it and then we take it through his snow covered fields.

I know this is an old post, but it got me thinking...

I would have to say that I would totally read Nancy Drew's blog. She's like, the fountain of all knowledge, not to mention a great cook.

Ok, and I would also read Jane Eyre's blog, although her book is kind of like a blog in itself.

What about Hester Prynne?

The possibilities are endless.

Unknown said...

Beth! All great ones...yes, Hester Prynne would be interesting...all characters in the SL would be...Pearl, Dimmesdale!
